Hi, and welcome to Sewbluethread. It’s maritime time again here at Sewbluethread, and I’m excited to show you another block. This block, ‘Ahoy the Sails’, has become one of my favourites. The pattern was very easy to follow. Lots of written instructions as well as diagrams to follow (for us visual learners). I used a fabric log (like a fabric jelly roll), and the fabric lengths on the log came in 26 pieces. A fabric piece measured whatever the fabric length was by 2 1/2″ wide. This fabric was designed by Rosalie Quinlan. The fabric line called ‘CHIRPY LOLA’, which in my opinion describes the bright colours bouncing around. I love it.
As I love bright colours, there was some apprehension about how to lay them out to look OK for the pattern. In the end, I used, the blues for water, greens for boat hull, pink for the left, and green for the right sail, and red for the flag. Easy done! Less is more, so stopped using colours, and just put a plain white 2 1/2 ” border around the outside before handsewing the coloured binding on it. That was enough to finish it off to make this ‘Ahoy the sails quilt pattern table topper, although it can also be used as a mini quilt wall hanging, or even to decorate on a table, while serving morning tea outdoors in the sun at the beach house.
The backing fabric came from Ikea, designed by Inga Leo, 2014.
The ‘Ahoy the Sails’ quilt pattern table topper measures at 30″ x 30″.
There is also another quilt block pattern in this series. This one is called ‘Ahoy the Anchors’.
This Ahoy the Anchors Table Topper measures 30″ x 30″.
If you like to have a go at one of these patterns, the instructions, are easy to follow. The ‘Ahoy the Sails’ quilt pattern and ‘Ahoy the Anchors’ quilt patterns work with just about any colour fabric combo.
So ’til next time.
have fun sewing.
Marsha.
